Hello WORLD.

Chris Rehm here, writing to let whomever cares to know that I will be releasing a new short-running record tomorrow, March 23rd. The great people at I Will Play This Song Once Again Records (Brussels, Belgium) hit me up a few months back and asked if I was interested in doing a release on their “concept” label.

So check it. Here’s this concept of which I speak: I will record two new songs – one minimal piano composition and one guitar drone track- for each person who orders the record, which is available on either CD or cassette. Got it? Each person gets a unique recording of these songs and I’ll even personally holla at you in the recordings. The release is limited to 15 copies.

I’ve wanted to do a release like this for a while, and I’m glad to finally do so, especially with a label which has released something from one of my favorite doners around now: Peter Broderick. So check it out if you’re interested. Also, CDs will be packaged and shipped out from Brussels, and cassettes I will make and ship out from right here in New Orleans. This will be available for mail-order tomorrow at noon (Belgian time), so 6am CST here in the states. Again, only 15 will be made, so set an alarm or some holy.

Thanks for reading. All the best.

Click the album art below (photo taken by Jono Foley) for more info and a stream of the songs.

Native America have come a long way since their humble beginnings as the bedroom recording project of singer-guitarist Ross Farbe. Over the past few years, they’ve transformed into a real life rock and roll band, a change they recently solidified with the release of a debut full length entitled Get Well Soon. In the weeks leading up to its release, Native America set out for a two week tour across the South. Along the way they played a whole bunch of great shows, shot a music video, and received word that their Kickstarter project to help release the record had been fully funded. To top it all off, the tour culminated with a set at the Community Records ALBUM RELEASE OF THE YEAR show at The Big Top, which celebrated the release of Get Well Soon along with new records from Astronomical, All People, and Stuck Lucky. A few days after that show of epic proportions, we got a chance to sit down and talk with Ross, John, and Ray about their triumphant homecoming, the successful Kickstarter project, and the high points of their tour.

So, the record release show at The Big Top was really awesome..

Ross: That was the finale of tour.

John: It was so well run by Greg and D-Ray of Community Records.

Ross: Yeah, that’s who we can really thank for that show.

John: It was seriously the most well organized rock and roll show I’ve ever seen.

Ray: Big shout out to the bands as well.

Ross: It’s just so much for a young record label to handle, and they just do it swimmingly … is that the word you use?

John: I think something goes swimmingly, I think you say the event went swimmingly.

Ross: It went swimmingly.

Your Kickstarter project was launched a few days before you went on tour, and it was successfully funded while you were still on the road. Where were you when the news came in?

John: We were in Jacksonville, Florida at a really weird show.

Ross: John checked his phone, and was like, “Dudes, we did it.”

So then did you guys go out and play a rockin’ set afterward?

Ross: We did.

John: Yeah, and this girl was trying to take Ray home.

Ray: Wait, what happened?

John: She was so drunk, and after he turned her down she was like “He doesn’t care about me!”

Ross: And then she just started talking shit.

John: She fell down outside the bar.

Well hopefully she’s alright. In talking to you guys it’s clear there were a lot of rad shows, but were there any other memorable moments?

John: Did other things happen? [pauses] Oh yeah! That guy in Memphis who kept playing that cover of “Across the Universe” and drinking Cuban rum and smoking cigarettes!

Ross: That’s a good anecdote. We got to Memphis really late, and when we woke up the next morning this guy puts on David Bowie’s cover of “Across the Universe,” turns it up as loud as it’ll go, and leaves the room.

Ray: And then he just starts chain smoking and prancing around the house.

Ross: He goes and grabs a bottle Cuban rum, takes a swig, and passes it around to everyone in the house.

John: This happened about every four hours.

Ray: Even at 4 in the morning. It would be so loud you couldn’t even talk to each other.

That certainly is a memorable moment. You guys got to play with some super cool bands along the way. Any in particular you want to mention?

Ross: Quiet People from Tallahassee. It’s two brothers and a sister, all super talented, making some strange, groovin’ songs. XMAS from Jacksonville is a friend of ours that writes incredible pop songs and records them really gross and lo-fi. And Hello Chief from Beaumont, they make crazy technical tropical soul pop.

Ray: Milezo from Austin and that pop band from Birmingham was cool too.

John: The pop band from Birmingham was called Younger Siblings and they do rule.

How about the to’ jams?

Ross: Our tape player was broken so we actually did a lot of Grooveshark-ing through a radio transmitter when the internet on our phones was working. Otherwise, we spent our drives chatting, contemplating, writing songs, or radio surfing.

Ray: I liked that Marvin Gaye duets album and the tornado warning radio station.

Here’s a video of Native America performing “Fate, TX” at a house show in Austin, Texas

We’re big fans of the folks over at WTUL 91.5. As active members of the New Orleans music community they continually play great music, sponsor shows, and help spread the word about Chinquapin artists and events. For this we owe them eternal gratitude. Now, the time of year has come for WTUL’s annual Marathon fundraising event, and in honor of this important occasion we have joined forces with some of our friends at the station to present CHINDIG 09, a benefit show at the Big Top on March 3rd. The show will feature performances from Caddywhompus, Habitat, and Leaving (Baton Rouge), and all proceeds will go directly toward keeping WTUL up and running for years to come! Doors will be at 8 PM, with music beginning at 9. Cover is $5, but remember, it’s for a great cause! Oh, and one more exciting tidbit…it’s ALL AGES. So come hang out, see a show, and support the coolest radio station in New Orleans!

(pictured above with manager Connor Crawford)

ArchAnimals are a trio of Texas dudes, born and raised. This should come as no surprise, as their homestate pride is proudly professed through a unique brand of twangy yet fuzzy nostalgic indie rock. Last December these guys took to the road for a tour across the Lone Star State, including stops in their hometowns of Houston and Dallas. When they returned, we spoke with singer-guitarist Dennis Sager about the high points of their journey, as well as the group’s thoughts on touring across their old stomping grounds. For a visual look at the tour, check out the video below the interview featuring the track “Television” off their debut release Waiting for Marriage.

The tour was primarily through your home state of Texas, including a stop in each member’s hometown. What are your thoughts on the state as a touring destination and its effect on the music you play?

This was our second major tour through the state of Texas. There’s this great sense of euphoria when we’re back in our home state: the gas station kolaches and breakfast tacos, easily accessible Shiner Bock. The three of us consciously and independently decided to leave Texas to live in southern Louisiana, so it feels as though we owe it to ourselves and our families to return.

Each of us spent the first eighteen years of our lives there, so where we are from definitely comes out in our playing. Whether it’s through melody or lyrics, part of the story-telling aspect of ArchAnimals comes from the history and folklore we’re taught growing up. This idea that even one person can make a difference and make their lasting mark- from the ragged adventure seeking freedom fighters all the way to the smooth talking wildcatting oilmen.

Texas has a lot of big cities, but each one seems to contain its own unique sub culture. How is this change in environment reflected across your shows?

Crowd-wise Texans can be described as polite in the formal sense, but they will definitely walk out if they are not entertained. We are constantly forced to think on our feet, pushing our playing and instruments to the extreme. If we’re playing in a country bar, we play setlist X. If we’re playing at a dingy hardcore bar, we play setlist Y.

Any one show that stands out as particularly memorable?

We first started playing as a trio at a house party, so the Houston house show was probably my favorite of the tour. Woozy and New Lands were also on the bill (they both killed it) resulting in this awesome and surreal feeling due to the fact that there were a dozen kids from New Orleans playing a party in Houston. We ran vocals out of a Vox AC30 and Casey (vox in New Lands) sounded so raw, making it a particularly memorable New Lands set. Matt’s from Houston, so Christian and I have adopted it as our home-away-from-home. The crowd was full of familiar faces and new friends that feel like old friends by now. Then we went to House of Pies two nights in a row.

What bands did y’all listen to on those long drives?

Why?, Sparklehorse, and At the Drive-In. As for reading: Life & Times of Michael K by J.M. Coetzee, Hate by Mark Salerno, and Ultramarine by Raymond Carver.

In order to help pay for the overwhelming hospital bills of a close friend, some of our folks have put together a killer compilation of unreleased tracks from Sun Hotel, Country Club, ArchAnimals, Chris Rehm, and more! On top of that, there’s going to be a benefit show, GarrettFEST, at Other Bar tomorrow afternoon before the parades. The show starts at noon, and will feature acoustic sets from Donovan Wolfington, ArchAnimals, My Father’s Rifle, Gold and the Rush, and Jack Donovan, to name a few. So, listen to and download the compilation HERE, check out the show tomorrow, and if you feel so inclined consider giving a donation to help Garrett on the road to physical and financial recovery!
